Can you do a white card online?

Want to work in the construction industry? A question you might be wondering is: Can you do a white card online? The answer is yes, in some circumstances, but it really depends on the state/territory you live in. The rules for white card training vary depending on where you live.

In today’s guide, we’ll explain what a white card is, who needs one, and the requirements for each Australian state and territory.

What is a white card?

A white card is the common name for the general construction induction card. It proves that a person has successfully completed the nationally-recognised unit: CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry.

It’s a legal requirement for anyone carrying out construction work or entering most active construction sites in Australia. This includes:

  • Labourers
  • Apprentices and trainees
  • Builders
  • Electricians
  • Plumbers
  • Carpenters
  • Site supervisors
  • Surveyors
  • Engineers
  • Trades assistants
  • Anyone who regularly visits construction sites.

The white card course teaches a number of essential skills, including risk management, hazard identification, emergency procedures, and the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE). After you’ve successfully completed your white card course, you’ll be able to use it on construction sites anywhere across Australia.

Steps for getting your white card

The white card is a short course, so it’s relatively straightforward to get. The steps for obtaining your white card should be similar, regardless of whether you choose to study face-to-face or online. Here is a general guide for what to expect when getting your white card qualification:

Step 1: Get a Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Every person that studies in Australia is required to have their own USI. This USI can be used for any studying you do. If you’ve gotten one before you won’t need another one, as the USI lasts for your entire student life. The USI is a government ID that’s used to track vocational training in Australia. It’s free, and only takes only about 5 minutes to get.

Step 2: Choose your RTO

You’ll need to complete your white card certificate through an accredited RTO. Consider whether you’re interested in studying in-person or online (where possible), and read reviews of different RTOs to see what past students have had to say. You may also like to ask family and friends for recommendations.

Step 3: Complete your  white card course

The white card course should only take around a day of study to complete. For in-person studying, this will generally mean attending classroom education for one day. For online white card courses, you can choose to complete your course in small chunks, over a number of days, weeks, or months.

Step 4: Receive your Statement of Attainment

After having successfully completed your white card course, you’ll be issued a Statement of Attainment. This shows employers and government officials that you’ve completed the recognised unit: CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry. Your white card will then be issued by the relevant state authority.

Step 5: Start working in the construction industry

Once your study is completed, you can legally begin working in the construction industry. Many employers accept a Statement of Attainment as proof of completion while you wait for your physical white card to be processed, so check to see if this is the case for your situation.

Is a white card valid throughout Australia?

Yes, typically a white card is valid for use throughout Australia. White cards are nationally-recognised, so provided you’ve obtained your certification through an approved RTO, you should be able to use it in any state or territory throughout the country. However, it’s always a good idea to check with your employer if you’re doing work in a state/territory different to the one on your white card.

How long does it take to get a white card?

Most white card training can be completed in 6 to 8 hours. For in-person training, this typically means the course is completed in a single day. When you choose to study your white card online, you can fit this study in around your schedule. This might mean finishing the course in a day, a week, or a month. The self-paced nature of the course makes online white card training incredibly convenient.

What is taught in a white card course?

While the white card course is offered by different providers, and through in-person and online education, the content should remain the same. Topics covered in the white card course include the basics of risk assessment, understanding safety signs and documentation, how to identify construction hazards, the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), emergency procedures, and the steps for reporting incidents and hazards. As an introductory course, you don’t need to have previous construction experience to complete your white card training.

Does a white card expire?

While in use, a white card does not expire. However, it’s worth noting that if you spend two or more consecutive years out of the construction industry, your white card will become invalid. If your white card becomes invalid, you’ll need to retake the white card course in order to be able to legally work on construction sites in Australia.
