Food handler certificate vs Food safety supervisor certificate: What’s the difference?

Food safety training is incredibly important for anyone working in hospitality, retail food, catering, or food manufacturing in Australia. For many roles and workplaces it’s a legal requirement as well as a practice way of reducing the risk of foodborne illnesses and customer complaints.

With such similar names, it’s easy to get confused about the difference between a food handler certificate and a food safety supervisor certificate. Both relate to food safety, but they serve different purposes.

Choosing the right qualification can help you improve job opportunities, and open up pathways to different roles. Whether you’re applying for your first job in a cafe, interested in moving into restaurant management, or want to open your own food business, it’s important to understand the difference between the two certificates so you can choose the right one for your career.

In today’s guide, we’ll explain what each certificate involves, who needs one, how they differ, and why both play an important role in keeping Australian food businesses safe and compliant.

What is a food handler certificate?

A food handler certificate is an entry-level qualification that teaches the essential principles of food safety. For many roles that involve the preparation, handling, or storage of food, it’s a legal requirement to hold a valid food handler certificate. Actions of food handlers have a significant impact on food safety, so it’s important that they understand steps to minimise risk and prevent contamination.

Some roles that may require a food handler certificate include:

  • Cafe and restaurant staff
  • Kitchen hands
  • Baristas
  • Waitstaff
  • Fast food employees
  • Bakery workers
  • Catering staff
  • Supermarket deli employees
  • Food truck workers

Have a chat with your employer to find out if your specific role requires a food handler certificate.

What do you learn in a food handler course?

The exact content can vary slightly between providers, but typically, a food handler course will cover topics such as:

  • Safe food storage
  • Preventing cross-contamination
  • Temperature control
  • Personal hygiene and hand washing practices
  • Cleaning and sanitising equipment
  • Identifying food hazards
  • Food allergies and allergens
  • Safe food handling practices

The aim of the course is to give workers the knowledge needed to safely prepare and serve food while reducing the risk of foodborne illness.

Who should do a food handler certificate?

A food handler certificate is a great qualification for anyone entering the hospitality or food industry. Even if you’re only working casually or part-time, employers often expect staff to have completed food safety training before handling food. As such, completing a food handler course can also make you a more attractive job candidate. Employers know they’ll spend less time training you on the basics and can feel more confident that you understand safe food handling practices from day one.

For many people, it’s one of the first qualifications to get (along with an RSA or barista course) when looking for work in the hospitality industry.

When completed online, a food handler certificate should take about half a day of study. Depending on your pace, it should take you between 2 and 6 hours to finish. With Express Online Training, you can pause and resume your study to fit around your schedule. This means you can complete it over a number of days or weeks.

What is a food safety supervisor certificate?

A food safety supervisor certification is a more advanced qualification that’s intended for those responsible for overseeing food safety within a business. Rather than simply following food safety procedures, a food safety supervisor also helps ensure that each person in the workplace is following the procedures correctly.

Lots of Australian food businesses are legally required to have at least one qualified food safety supervisor appointed. A food safety supervisor could be:

  • Cafe owners
  • Head chefs
  • Restaurant managers
  • Kitchen managers
  • Catering managers
  • Bakery managers
  • Hospitality supervisors
  • Owners of relevant food businesses

What is the role of a food safety supervisor?

As stated above, a food safety supervisor is a role that can be held by a number of different positions. There are several responsibilities for a food safety supervisor. These typically include:

  • Monitoring hygiene standards
  • Identifying food safety risks
  • Ensuring food is stored correctly
  • Checking temperatures
  • Helping to train staff
  • Supervising safe food handling practices
  • Ensuring food safety procedures are followed
  • Assisting with compliance during health inspections

It is, of course, important that all employees contribute to food safety, but the role of the food safety supervisor is to oversee and help maintain consistent standards in the workplace.

What is taught in a food safety supervisor course?

A food safety supervisor course is more advanced than the food handler course. In this course you’ll learn concepts such as:

  • Hazard identification and control
  • Temperature monitoring
  • Food safety programs
  • Record keeping
  • Corrective actions to take
  • Australian food safety legislation
  • Supervising staff to maintain safety standards
  • Managing food safety risks
  • Maintaining compliance with food safety standards

This means the course can be completed in your own time, from anywhere with an internet connection. The online food safety supervisor course is great for those with a busy schedule, or who live remotely.

How long does a food safety supervisor course take to complete?

The food safety supervisor course takes around a day to complete. When you study online, you can complete it at your own pace. While the course takes around 6 to 8 hours of study to finish, with Express Online Training, you can complete it across a number of days or weeks.

What’s the difference between a food handler certificate and a food safety supervisor certificate?

In simple terms, a food handler is someone who follows food safety procedures, while a food safety supervisor is someone who makes sure everyone else follows them too. Both qualifications have a focus on safe food procedures, but the level of responsibility is quite different. A food handler is responsible for preparing food safely during their own shift, while a food safety supervisor has broader responsibilities for maintaining food safety standards throughout the business.

Do you need both a food handler certificate and a food safety supervisor certificate?

Depending on your role, you may need both a food handler certificate and a food safety supervisor certificate. If you are promoted or wish to get into a management position, having both can be helpful. For example, if you’re working in an entry-level hospitality role, you may only need a food handler certificate. However, if you’re promoted to a supervisor role or want to open your own cafe, you may need to also complete the food safety supervisor course.

Which certificate is right for you?

The course to choose depends on your career goals and what your role requires.

Choose a food handler certificate if:

  • You want to get your first hospitality job in Australia
  • You’ll be preparing and serving food but not supervising staff
  • Your employer requires basic food safety training
  • You want an affordable qualification that can improve your employability

Choose a food safety supervisor certificate if:

  • You supervise kitchen or hospitality staff
  • You’re a restaurant or café manager
  • You own or are opening a food business
  • You’re responsible for food safety compliance
  • You’re looking to progress into leadership roles

Choose both certificates if:

  • You want maximum job flexibility and choice
  • You plan to stay in hospitality long term
  • You are aiming to get management roles
  • You think you may eventually run your own cafe, restaurant, or catering business

Why are these qualifications important?

Food safety, ultimately, is about protecting customers. Foodborne illnesses are often caused by contaminated food, and many of these incidents can be prevented by following proper food handling procedures and maintaining high hygiene standards. Food safety training helps workers learn how to reduce risks. For a business, this training can have significant benefits, including:

  • Reduced risk of food contamination
  • Greater compliance with food safety legislation
  • Better preparation for health inspections
  • Improved workplace culture
  • Improved customer confidence
  • Better food safety practices
  • Reduced likelihood of costly mistakes

Typically, those starting out in hospitality will only require a food handler certificate. This course is inexpensive, quick to complete, and commonly required for entry-level food service roles. A food safety supervisor certificate, however, is the qualification that lets you become responsible for food safety compliance. It requires more time and money, but provides access to supervisory positions.

We hope you’ve enjoyed learning about the differences between the food handler course and the food safety supervisor course. Express Online Training has partnered with Streamline Training to offer both courses to those interested in obtaining further qualifications.
