How long does an RSG course take?

Whether you have a busy schedule and want to plan around it, or are simply curious, you might find yourself wondering ‘how long does an RSG course take?’. When studied as an in-person course, the Responsible Service of Gambling (RSG) generally takes around 4 to 6 hours, however, studying online lets you complete the RSG at your own pace.

In today’s article, we’ll explain how long an RSG course takes to complete, and answer a number of frequently asked questions about the qualification.

What is an RSG?

An RSG stands for the Responsible Service of Gambling. In some states, it’s referred to as the Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG). This qualification is a legal requirement for anyone intending to work in the gambling industry, including those in casinos, pubs, clubs, and other establishments that have gambling facilities.

How long does the RSG course take?

The time it takes to complete an RSG course will vary depending on a number of factors. For example, completing an RSG course online may be faster than completing one in-person.  As mentioned earlier, an in-person course typically takes 4 to 6 hours, while online courses allow you to complete the certification at your own pace. This means you can take breaks and pick up where you left off, making it a more flexible option for those with busy schedules.

Differences between in-person and online RSG courses

When it comes to completing an RSG course, there are two main options available – in-person or online. Each option has its own set of benefits and drawbacks, making them suitable for different individuals depending on their needs and preferences.

In-person RSG course

In-person RSG courses are typically held in a classroom setting, with an instructor guiding the class through the material. This allows for face-to-face interaction and immediate clarification of any questions or concerns. However, it may not be feasible for those with busy schedules or for individuals who prefer to work at their own pace.

RSG course online

Online RSG courses can be completed at any time, from anywhere with an internet connection. This allows for more flexibility and convenience, as you can fit in your studies around your other commitments. However, it may require more self-motivation and discipline to complete the course on your own, without the guidance of an instructor.

What jobs require an RSG certificate?

An RSG certificate is necessary for a range of roles within the gambling industry, including but not limited to:

  • Bartenders and bar staff who work in pubs, clubs or other licensed venues with gaming facilities.
  • Gaming attendants or machine operators in casinos, hotels, and clubs.
  • Cashiers working in any establishment that offers gambling services.
  • Security personnel responsible for monitoring gaming areas.
  • Managers and supervisors overseeing gambling operations.

It’s important to note that certain job positions may require additional certifications, such as a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate. It’s best to check with your potential employer or local laws to ensure you have all the necessary qualifications for the role you’re interested in.

Can I complete an RSA and RSG course together?

Yes! Many Registered Training Organisations (such as Express Online Training) provide bundles, allowing you to purchase the RSA course with the RSG course. This can be a cost-effective way to obtain both qualifications at once, and is especially handy for those looking to work in the hospitality industry. Just be sure to choose a bundle that allows you to work within the states and territories you wish to work in.
