If you’re looking at bar work, you may have seen the term “RSA” used in ads. At first, seeing that you need an RSA certificate to get started might seem a little intimidating, but getting an RSA doesn’t have to be tricky or complicated. It’s a short course, and depending on where you live in Australia, you may even be able to complete it online.
So, what is an RSA certificate? Read on to find out!
What does RSA stand for?
RSA stands for Responsible Service of Alcohol.
What is an RSA certificate?
An RSA is a certificate that is a mandatory requirement for those whose job requires them to sell or serve alcohol. As such, it is common for positions within the hospitality industry to list holding a current, accredited RSA as a requirement for the job. In some states, other positions may also be required to have a valid RSA. For example, as of 1 July 2018, Crowd Controllers and Security Officers who work in licensed premises in Western Australia are required to hold an approved RSA certification.
How do you get an RSA certificate?
You can obtain an RSA certificate by successfully completing a Responsible Service of Alcohol course. Many states now allow you to complete an RSA online. When looking at potential places to complete your RSA, make sure you verify that the company delivering the course is an accredited Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Express Online Training is an RTO that has online RSA courses for applicable states, allowing you to complete your course from the comfort of your own home.

How long is an RSA valid for?
This is a bit of a tricky question to answer, as the length of validity of your certificate can change from state to state. It also depends on a number of factors, such as when the course was completed. For example, an NSW competency card (such as for RSA or RCG certification) expires after 5 years. However, it’s important to note that due to COVID-19, the NSW Government has extended the expiry dates to 30 June 2021 for cards that were due to expire after 1 March 2020 that had not been renewed by 29 May 2020. When working out the validity of your card, be sure to check your state or territory’s laws to find out if it can still be used. If you are still unsure, contact your relevant government body.
